Rattlesnake captures a split-second moment of explosive action as a bucking horse recoils from the sudden threat beneath it. The startled cowboy grips the reins with one hand while instinctively securing his hat with the other, fighting to maintain balance as the horse twists upward in alarm.

Originally sculpted in 1904 and considered one of Remington’s finest achievements, this composition showcases his mastery in portraying movement and suspense within bronze. The dramatic elevation of the horse — rising on two legs — presented a significant technical challenge, further demonstrating Remington’s innovation and sculptural skill.

The entire composition centers on the small yet dangerous rattlesnake at the horse’s feet, making it the focal point of tension in this powerful Western narrative.

In July 2014, an original casting of Rattlesnake sold at auction for $380,250, reinforcing its status as one of Remington’s most admired and collected works.
