Old Dragoons is one of Frederic Remington’s most ambitious and technically daring sculptures. Copyrighted in 1905, this dramatic composition features five horses and four mounted riders — two American cavalrymen and two Plains Indians — locked in intense, hand-to-hand combat.
The cavalry soldiers, known as Dragoons, were highly trained mounted troops active from the 1830s onward and tasked with confronting Plains tribes, who were widely regarded as some of the most formidable horsemen in history. In this powerful scene, Remington captures the precise moment the Dragoons close in, creating a swirling composition of motion, tension, and raw physical struggle.
True to Remington’s dedication to authenticity, the military uniforms, rifles, and equipment are historically accurate. The Native figures reflect the types Remington encountered during his travels in the American West in the late 19th century.
As with many of his most celebrated works, Remington challenged himself structurally as well as artistically. Of the twenty hooves depicted in the sculpture, only seven touch the ground — a remarkable feat of balance and engineering that heightens the sense of movement and urgency. Due to its extraordinary complexity, only three casts were produced during Remington’s lifetime.
