Coming Through The Rye was Remington’s first composition to feature more than two horses and, at the time of its creation, was his largest and most ambitious bronze. The dynamic scene captures four cowboys riding at full speed — six hooves striking the ground as the others lift mid-stride — creating an extraordinary sense of motion and balance.
To Remington, this sculpture represented the joyful release of cowboys finishing a long and strenuous cattle drive. The riders surge forward with spirited abandon, celebrating freedom and camaraderie as they head toward a well-earned evening in town.
In 1989, an original casting of Coming Through The Rye was auctioned at Christie’s New York for $4.4 million, underscoring its significance as one of the most iconic works of American Western sculpture.
