Outlaw stands as one of Remington’s most dramatic bucking horse compositions. Horse and rider are captured in suspended animation, balanced on a single front hoof — a daring feat of sculptural engineering that showcases both artistic mastery and frontier intensity. The bronc rears violently, hindquarters thrust skyward, while the rider leans back in controlled defiance, fighting to hold his seat against the explosive force beneath him.

This was Remington’s 14th sculpture and presented a remarkable casting challenge. Working closely with Roman Bronze Works and its head, Riccardo Bertelli, Remington famously sent a sketch of the model asking, “Can you cast him?” The result was a triumph of the Lost Wax method — achieving balance and motion in a composition that appears almost impossible in bronze.

Often considered the companion to Bronco Buster, Outlaw captures the upward surge of chaos — the moment before gravity and exhaustion take their toll.
