The Mountain Man

After Frederic Remington, 1903

Few sculptures capture the raw danger and determination of the American frontier like The Mountain Man. Originally sculpted in 1903 by Frederic Remington, this masterwork portrays a solitary trapper guiding his horse down a near-vertical mountain slope — a moment of tension frozen in bronze.

Remington described the figure as one of the old Iroquois trappers who followed the fur companies through the Rocky Mountains in the 1830s and 1840s. The scene is not romanticized — it is survival. Man and horse descend together with caution and skill, bound by trust.

The rider leans sharply backward in the saddle, gripping the tail strap for balance while giving the horse full rein to choose its footing. The animal braces itself against the rocky decline, muscles tight, hooves searching for stability. Viewed from the front or side, the composition creates a dizzying sense of height and movement — exactly as Remington intended.

Detail & Craftsmanship

This sculpture is celebrated for its remarkable textures and realism. The fringed buckskin garment, the horse’s taut musculature, and the rugged rock base are rendered with extraordinary precision. Every angle reveals Remington’s commitment to balance, lifelike stance, and authentic Western character.

This edition is cast in 100% solid bronze using the traditional Lost Wax method — the same time-honored process used for over a century to achieve fine detail and structural integrity. The sculpture is finished in a rich patina that enhances depth and contrast, and is typically mounted on a polished black marble base with an engraved brass nameplate. The bronze bears Remington’s signature.

A Tribute to Frontier Grit

The Mountain Man represents more than a trapper on horseback — it embodies resilience, calculated risk, and the unforgiving spirit of the West. It is a commanding display piece for executive offices, ranch estates, collectors of Western art, or anyone drawn to the legacy of American expansion.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor display, this heirloom-quality bronze is built to endure for generations with minimal maintenance.

This is not simply a sculpture.
It is frontier history cast in bronze.
